Urban Data Hackathon

The Urban Data Hackathon is our summer semester practical course where students form small teams (3-6 people) to develop creative, free software solutions for real-world challenges on urban data, which is available from numerous APIs from the city of Hamburg.

Focusing on current trends in mobile computing, cloud technologies, augmented reality, and peer-to-peer systems, participants work intensively to create useful applications within a short timeframe.

Distributed Operating Systems (DOS) Urban Data Platform Hamburg

Summer 2026

Hanseprint

Interactively display buildings and streets in the browser and generate 3D-printable models (e.g., of landmarks) from LoD3 models of the city of Hamburg.

SpotScore

Calculates a comfort index for selected locations using environmental data (temperature, humidity, wind, rain, noise) and sun exposure prediction using raycasting. Helps answering questions like, "Where should we meet this weekend?" in a group and runs completely clientside in the browser.

Life Quality Index

Creates a Life Quality Index for all of Hamburg, based on criteria such as social factors, infrastructure, and environment. Offers a compact overview with fine-grained customization tailored to individual needs.

RadReport

The app for all cycling infrastructure at a glance, including pump stations, Bike+Ride parking, bike shops, and more. The community feature allows users to share reviews and feedback on the condition of facilities.

Pastlane

Analyzes historical traffic and event data to identify and visualize traffic patterns from past events. This may also help estimate traffic volumes for similar future events.

UGV Routing

Develops a routing system for drones/UGVs based on OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. Uses the A* algorithm with weighted features (e.g., construction sites, traffic jams, bike counters) to find optimal routes, and exports to Robot OS (ROS) for direct UGV control.
